Selena Gomez’s new project involves reshaping Sixteen Candles into a new series with a Latinx twist! The star is collaborating with multiple outstanding figures to bring the project to life.

Called 15 Candles, Selena Gomez’s spin on Sixteen Candles will surely be an impressive one. With clear ties to the Latinx community, the comedy series will take some ideas from the 1984 coming-of-age movie. The sitcom will have 30-minute episodes, which "will follow four young Latinas in high school, navigating feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind as quinceañera season approaches," according to Variety.

The original film portrayed the story of high school sophomore Sam and her 16th birthday. While Sam was extremely happy to celebrate her special day, her older sister decided to get married the next day. That’s when the character understands that everyone is paying attention to her self-centered sister instead of her. Even her family forgets about her birthday. Will 15 Candles follow the same narrative? We’ll have to wait and see.

Gomez will be the executive producer of 15 Candles, which is set to air on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service. Of course, it’s not the first time the singer is dabbling in filmmaking and TV production. In fact, she already served as an executive producer for Netflix from 2017 to 2020 on the company’s adaptation for 13 Reasons Why. Tanya Saracho and Gabriela Revilla Lugo have also joined the project to bring this Sixteen Candles reboot to life.

Previously, Saracho served as a writer, director, and producer of the Starz drama Vida. Meanwhile, Lugo also has a ton of experience under her belt. As a writer, director, and producer, she has influenced multiple projects, including Whiplash, Palm Springs, and A Million Little Things. Saracho is represented by UTA and Writ Large and J.R. McGinnis at Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson while Lugo is represented by Brandy Rivers at Industry and Chris Abramson at Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

15 Candles is currently Gomez's second project. Currently, she stars in the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. For her role in the comedy as Mabel Mora, Gomez received a nomination from the Critics' Choice Awards for best actress in a comedy series.

Gomez also has other successful projects such as a makeup line called Rare Beauty, which garnered positive reviews. She also models the makeup herself. During the latest awards season, Gomez served as a presenter at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her sparkling look included makeup products from Rare Beauty, a black velvet gown by Oscar de la Renta, and Bulgari diamonds.
