Biopic series and films have become a huge hit over the past few years. Various bands and celebrities, both retired and active, have already gotten films and TV shows about their lives. Now, a U2 Netflix series by J.J. Abrams is in the works as well!
U2 Netflix Series Is In Works
Known for their impact on rock 'n roll, U2 has never had any series or movies dedicated to them. But now, the new U2 Netflix series is already in production! The band's history will be captured in a special series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. J.J. Abrams is the one responsible for the idea, and he’s developing the project with his Bad Robot production company. After the product is ready, it will be published on one of the biggest streaming services, Netflix.
Who else is taking part in the new U2 Netflix series? Anthony McCarten is rumored to be one of the main developers. Previously, he has worked on a vast collection of biopics, which include the massive hit Bohemian Rhapsody, winner of best picture. Moreover, the Oscar nominee has looked into the lives of Stephen Hawking, Winston Churchill, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis over the last few years. He was nominated for his incredible job on Two Popes and Darkest Hour and Theory of Everything were also nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. Thanks to his outstanding experience in film, and biopics in particular, McCarten is the perfect companion for Abrams for the upcoming U2 Netflix series.
The History of U2
Isn't it weird that U2 has never had their own biopic? The band is legendary! The band includes frontman Bono, lead guitarist Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Formed back in 1976, it’s probably one of the most popular groups from Dublin, Ireland, with a long history of hits. U2 has come out with great music — so far, they have 14 studio albums. Furthermore, they have sold more than 170 million records worldwide and have taken 22 Grammys back to Ireland, a record in the music scene! In 2005, the band was integrated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. U2’s most popular albums include The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Songs of Innocence, and Songs of Experience. In 2010, they also placed 22nd on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest artists of all time.
Which parts of this long career will the series feature? It’s still unclear. Of course, the biopic should follow the heroes’ success story and some behind-the-scenes shots. In 2022, sources are still unsure whether it will tell the viewers their backstory or focus on post-fame life. Even U2 members have no idea how the biopic about them will go! The creators haven’t yet cast the series either. Unfortunately, Netflix hasn’t announced the biopic series release date or the number of episodes or seasons. We do know that the band members will definitely be a part of the project, though. We’ll have to wait for more information on the fresh project.
