The Millennium Trilogy — also known as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books — will be expanded for fans. Not only that, but one of the best Swedish female authors will be working on the exciting story.
Bringing New Life to the Millennium Trilogy
Published posthumously in 2005, Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books became a worldwide success. A whopping 6.2 million copies sold for over $44.4 million just in the United Kingdom. Three more novels written by David Lagercrantz between 2015 and 2019 — The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, and The Girl Who Lived Twice — gained almost the same level of popularity.
Now, the series will continue with the help of a female author for the first time. Karin Smirnoff, a Swedish bestselling writer, has been signed on to write them. Smirnoff is probably the best pick for the expansion. In Sweden, she has sold over 700,000 copies of her books, including My Brother. A woman will also be assigned to the project to translate them into English.
The U.K. is set to receive the first copies of the new series on August 31, 2023 while North American readers will be able to snatch a book on September 5, 2023. What is the seventh book about? There's only one hint — the setting will probably take place in northern Sweden amid rapid change and growth.
Smirnoff’s View On The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Books
Smirnoff is postponing her publications to work on the new novel. “It feels almost solemn to write the sequel to Millennium. I said yes to the project without hesitation, even though it postpones my own ideas for new novels,” she stated, explaining that she’s thrilled to add something to the worldly trilogy. “The Millennium books are classics in their genre, where the combination of unforgettable characters and the strong political and societal engagement still fascinates readers. I will continue to build on Stieg Larsson’s core themes, such as violence, abuse of power, and contemporary political currents.”
Jonas Axelsson, publishing manager at Polaris, is also excited to see how the new writer will extend the story in her own way. "To take this deeply loved story forward as a new original publisher is not only dizzying and honouring but also very encouraging," he said.
He's not the only one who's sure Smirnoff will do a great job on the new Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books. “Everything we know about Karin Smirnoff and her work tells us she has the perfect sensibility not only to continue on from David Lagercrantz’s trilogy with great drive and imagination, but also to make the series her own. And it feels just right that Lisbeth Salander’s universe should now be brought to life by a woman,” MacLehose Press publisher, Katharina Bielenberg, said. “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Karin on these next instalments.... We couldn’t be more excited to announce a new trilogy, except that I probably am more excited. Karin Smirnoff is a literary talent of the highest order and a huge bestseller in her native Sweden."
